Key Consideration when Purchasing Door Levers

At Altro Constructions, we’ve built a reputation for designing and delivering elegant, cutting-edge sliding and stacking doors for residential and commercial buildings around Australia. However, we also have a range of high-quality traditional door systems and hardware. Like sliding doors, traditional doors come in a huge variety of styles, shapes, sizes, and materials to suit every setting, and choosing the right one for your space can feel overwhelming. This is just as true of door handles and levers as it is for the doors themselves. For our latest blog, we discuss how to choose the right levers and handles for your doors.

Fit Form to Function

First things first, before you get into the aesthetics of your door lever, you will want to consider what purpose it serves. Is it an indoor or outdoor entryway? Bedroom or lounge? If it’s an outdoor handle, security will definitely be a central concern, so you will want to choose a door lever with a strong, reliable lock. You may or may not want locks on your bedroom doors as well, but probably not on hallway or lounge doors.

Buying Separate Vs. Buying a Door Latch Pack

It is worth pointing out here that all the pieces of hardware like hinges, latches, and levers – collectively known as ‘door furniture’ – are not always sold together. For some people, who have a firm idea in mind of exactly what they want, this can be a plus, as they may want to source a specific set of vintage door levers or knockers but use new hinges. Most of the time, however, we suggest you buy a complete door system from the one provider, as they are designed to work together and are less likely to cause you problems down the track. Buying a door latch pack is also going to save you quite a lot of time as opposed to tracking down individual parts for each entryway and is likely to be more stylistically coherent as well functionally practical.

The Question of Style

Choosing the right door lever is much like choosing any other element of interior design; that is, it is not chosen in isolation but as part of the whole. An ornately scrolled, iron door handle might look great by itself, but if you’ve gone with a sleek, modern feel for the rest of your home or office, it’s going to look wildly out of place.

This doesn’t mean that you need to have the exact same style of door and lever throughout the entire building. Each room might have a slightly different feel to it, and you might use different types of doors in each one. In this case, it makes sense to choose the door lever that best suits that room’s particular ambience. Of course, this can make things a little more complicated than if you are going with the same style throughout, but when done properly, the effect can be quite beautiful.

Buy Good Quality Hardware

This seems an obvious point, but you’d be surprised how many people are charmed by a unique or flashy door lever that really doesn’t work smoothly or breaks after a couple of months. Research the hardware before you buy, read lots of online reviews, and don’t make the mistake of choosing style over substance (or in this case, functionality).
